ASHRAE GIKI Chapter had its kick start with Intra GIKI event Named ” Innovation Challenge” in fall 2012.The main aim of the Intra event was to promote Technical and Innovation skills among GIKI students and provide them a platform to apply their theoretical knowledge. Students of all disciplines were encouraged to take part in 3 hour activity, Teams were allowed to work with available materials and design an efficient wind Turbine, the turbine which uplifted the maximum weight and had most advanced design was declared the winner. Prize money of PKR 3000 was awarded to winners. Participants urged ASHRAE members to conduct such Intra events every semester as they learned much more outside class in these curricular activities than inside classroom.
ASHRAE GIKI Chapter organized its first seminar in spring 2013 on 5th of January. Seminar was attended by Faculty of Mechanical Engineering professors, graduate and undergraduate students of GIKI. Week later, Induction’s started for batch 22,after 3 days of rigorous selections, only 16 students were selected to be a part of ASHRAE GIKI Chapter from among 86 Batch 22 students.
Last but not the least, The All Pakistan Event “Thermocon” was held on 1st-3rd Feb. Over 100 participants registered for the event from all over Pakistan. The main Modules were Thermal Tempest, Innovation, Hacking the Brain and Green Idea Challenge. It started with the Thermal Tempest where the participants were to answer the technical questions related to thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, HVAC, statics and every day science.
The highlight of ThermoCon’ 13 was the industrial participation and seminars by the industrial executives. The prominent figures included Mr. Aslam Azad CEO Economia, Mr. AsifJah Chairman REAP (Renewable Energy Association of Pakistan), Dean NUST IESE (Institute of Environmental Sciences and Engineering) and Mr. NadeemUllah Sheikh GM of Century Paper and Board Mills Lahore.
Mr. Aslam Azad started with an innovative idea of Bed Air Conditioning. Implementation of this idea can lead to a sharp reduction in energy bills of a household. Mr. Aslam also explained the business strategies in successful marketing of this unit. Following this session He offered final year project grants to the participants. Dr. Yousaf Raza spoke on What Is True love in the light of Islamic teachings?.” True love is not the love of money or pride rather it is the love for Allah and love for humanity” was the essence of his talk. The next day Mr. AsifJah and Mr. NadeemUllah gave a seminar on industrial exposure which was meant to enlighten students with the basic challenges and choices every student has to make after graduating from their university.
Hacking the Brain, The idea behind was to use full potential of one’s mental capabilities to understand a problem by a video. The participants were shown the video and after that they were asked different questions about the concept explained in the video and the winning team was given certificates and winning shield. This new module was highly appreciated by the participants.
Thermocon’13 was a big success! , Green Idea Challenge an Initiative set up by Batch 18 ASHRAE proved to be fruitful, as teams competed to present the most feasible and advanced Solutions which were environmentally friendly. Green Idea Challenge, GIC, was an opportunity for Students to be able to make a difference and present their ideas that may have a positive influence on the society. The ideas were divided into three broad categories:
1. Energy Efficient Systems
2. Use of Recycled Products
3. Environment friendly systems
Participants had to choose problems from either designing a self-sustainable home or a farm with the design parameters specified. The scope which the presentations handled and the basic understanding of green technologies were the main judging criteria. GIC was divided into two rounds. 5 teams were shortlisted after Round I. In Round II, teams were judged on the basis of a 15 minute presentation followed by a question answer session. We had judges from REAP, Century Paper and Board Mills, and PCRET in the final round of GIC. A team from Bahauddin Zakayria University, Multan topped this competition.
Finally, ASHRAE GIKI chapter took part in promoting social activities by setting up stall for Cultural, Dramatics & Entertainment Society Basant Festival ’13.Students and Faculty kids took part in different game activities, all together it was Fun and another gathering for Batch 20,21 and 22 members.
